International Children's Book Day is celebrated annualy on April the 2nd, in honour of Hans Christian Andersen's birthday. Talks, exhibitions and all sorts of activities involving children's books authors and illustrators and their young readers are held worldwide on and around this day, and the little corner of the world I live in was no exception. A festival was held in the facility of the Achaia Clauss, a renowned local wine-refinery and guess who was exhibiting his illustrations inside an old wine-tank [link] ;P

Although I feel very tempted to go in bitter mode and write a screed about all the shoulds and the oughts and the musts that came a cropper -and believe me they were plenty. I'd rather write about the earnestness certain people showed, which at the end of the day, was the one thing that really made the difference. People like Olga, taxi-driver extraordinaire, who unselfisly devoted herself and her cab for a whole weekend to the festival and was always present wherever help was needed. Or Philippos, a talented author and zappy performer,  who suprised me today with an unexpected act of altruism and fair-play. And of course Tonia and the rest of the Achaia Clauss staff who were bombarded with children of all ages but never lost their cool.

And speaking of the little devils; more on the subject of their encounter with an unsuspecting illustrator very soon. =)

No need to wait that long Carey! Ask your local library, they are usually involved with author visits and storytelling sessions all year round.

I think it would be amazing to attend something like that. I'm not aware of any such celebrations around me, but that's probably because I haven't been looking for them. Now I know when they are held. What an appropriate day! I always wanted to illustrate children's books. Perhaps next year, if and when I learn of a Children's Books celebration around me, I'll go and get inspired to make my own.
